NGT allows Art of Living’s event but fines organizers, authorities

New Delhi: Overriding environmental objections, the National Green Tribunal on Wednesday allowed the Art of Living Foundation hold its massive World Culture Festival on the banks of river Yamuna, but said the organization must pay “restoration costs” for damaging the environment. The green court imposed an initial cost of ₹ 5 crore on the foundation, led by spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. I am satisfied with the court’s order as it has pulled up various authorities that were not following the procedure laid under the law and do not intend to approach the Supreme Court in this regard.” While it has been established that the foundation has not yet obtained permission from the police, ministry of water resources and fire department, other authorities have given permissions without conducting the necessary checks. Prabhu and Shashi Shekhar, secretary, ministry of water resources, had said that the event could have adverse environmental impact on the floodplains and estimated ₹ 100-120 crore as the cost of restoration of the floodplains after examining the extent of damage, indicating that AOL may be let off with a fine.
