New Disclosure Requirements Loom for Political Ads on Facebook, Google

Live Mint

Federal Election Commission (FEC) is proposing new regulations for online political advertising. These rules would require political ad buyers on Facebook, Alphabet Inc.’s Google, and other online platforms to disclose information about sponsors of online advertisements, including the amount spent and the target audience. The rules would apply to ads bought to expressly advocate for the election or defeat of a federal candidate, online solicitations to raise money for a political committee or candidate, and other online spending by political committees. The effort is one of the few federal attempts to revise rules in the wake of Russia’s election meddling in 2016.
