We must make sustained use of private sector to clear NHS backlog, says Steve Barclay
The TelegraphThe NHS must make “sustained” use of the private sector to clear the backlog of 7.75 million patients, the Health Secretary has said. Steve Barclay told members of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network – Britain’s only group of private healthcare providers – that Covid had highlighted the “opportunities” to utilise the independent sector to treat patients faster. He said the public and independent sector had to be “united with a clear goal, to use every capacity to cut the waiting lists” and praised the role of private providers during the pandemic “to provide NHS care to patients most in need”. The NHS worked effectively with the independent sector to maximise capacity and to tackle a common challenge and many people in this room contributed to this effort,” he told the IHPN annual summit.
