James Cleverly refuses to negotiate pay with nurses to prevent strikes
The TelegraphJames Cleverly has rejected an offer by the Royal College of Nursing to pause strikes if ministers agree to talks on pay. He said the Health Secretary’s “door was open” to meetings with the union’s leaders, but added that negotiations over pay were the responsibility of NHS employers and an independent pay review body. The Foreign Secretary told Times Radio it would be “it would be completely wrong” for a government minister to get involved with nurses’ pay negotiations and “would completely undermine the leadership of the NHS”. RCN members are due to take part in unprecedented strike action on Dec 15 and 20 in pursuit of a 17.6 per cent pay rise, five per cent above inflation. However, Pat Cullen, the RCN general secretary, offered on Saturday to pause the walkout in exchange for pay talks after earlier this week accusing Steve Barclay, the Health Secretary, of “bully boy” tactics.
