India TodayA new study published in the journal Nature Sustainability, found that compared to existing diets, the water required to produce our food could be reduced by between 11 per cent and 55 per cent for healthy diets of different kinds. How the study was conducted Scientists from the European Commission Joint Research Centre compared three diet patterns ; namely healthy diets containing meat healthy pescetarian diets healthy vegetarian diets; to the current actual food consumption, using available data from more than 43 thousand areas in France, the UK and Germany. The results of the diet analysis Scientists said, according to PTI, that the water required could be reduced by: 33 per cent and 55 per cent for healthy pescetarian diets 11 to 35 per cent for healthy diets containing meat 35 per cent and 55 per cent for healthy vegetarian diets Water footprint: Water footprint is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce goods consumed, food in this particular case. Why you should trust the results The study is the most detailed food consumption-related water footprint ever made, taking into account socio-economic factors of food consumption, for existing and recommended diets, researchers said.
