Explained: What is GST e-invoicing? What’s changed from April 1, 2025?

The Story so far: The GST Council of India approved and rolled out the ‘e-invoicing’ or ‘electronic invoicing’ eco-system in a phased manner for reporting of business-to-business invoices to GST portal. New rules from April 1, 2025: From April 1, 2025, business houses with an Annual Aggregate Turn Over of ₹10 crore and above must report/upload e-invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal within 30 days from the date of issue of the document. GST e-invoicing involves reporting of B2B invoices and export invoices issued by taxpayers, to their customers, on the Union Government’s e-invoice portal and getting a unique Invoice Reference Number. The standard of GST e-invoice was first approved by the GST Council in its 37th meeting held on September 20, 2019. e-Invoicing was introduced in India, in a phased manner, in October 2020 for taxpayers with Annual Aggregate Turn Over of more than ₹500 crore.
