Diplomatic spat sours Kiribati-New Zealand relations

ABC

There is concern in Kiribati that New Zealand might stem the flow of development aid due to a diplomatic spat between president Taneti Maamau and New Zealand's foreign minister Winston Peters. But for New Zealand's foreign minister, the move is a snub, the latest of three Peters three cancelled or postponed visits in recent months. And we've had concerns over the years with how the current government managers relations with those partners," said Tessie Lambourne, Kiribati's opposition leader. "There's been radio silence from our government for a long time, there's been news over the years with difficulties with diplomatic staff visas… and there's been changes to how this government handles relations with our partners," she added.
