Roy Whiting, who was jailed for life in 2001 for the abduction and murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne, was attacked by Richard Prendergast and Kevin Hyden with makeshift weapons in his cell at Wakefield Prison, Leeds Crown Court heard. Judge Tom Bayliss QC told them it mattered “not a jot" what the pair's motivation was for attacking Whiting, and he said their victim's notoriety was “irrelevant”.
