The fight over salmon farming in Tasmania
ABCELLEN COULTER, REPORTER: We’re still months away from a federal election but in regional Tasmania, a theme is already emerging. ELLEN COULTER: Ty Becker started working in salmon farming on Tasmania’s west coast when he was 16. ELLEN COULTER: The salmon industry says scientific reports trying to draw a causal link between fish farming and reduced dissolved oxygen levels are based on flawed assumptions. ELLEN COULTER: Under national environmental laws, the minister is now considering if salmon farming should continue in the harbour, if it needs new conditions or if the salmon companies need to stop operating and apply for new approvals - a process the industry says could take two years. ELLEN COULTER: On the same day, the Prime Minister announced $28 million in funding to improve water quality in Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour.
