Canberra man Alex Ophel charged with attempted murder over stabbing of two students at Australian National University

A 24-year-old man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder over the stabbing of two female students at the Australian National University in Canberra. Key points: Alex Ophel, 24, has made a brief appearance in court, charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault and one count of possessing an object to be used to kill Police are yet to establish a motive for the attack or determine how Mr Ophel came to be on campus ANU vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt has thanked students who stepped in to help Police allege Alex Ophel hit a male student on the head with a frying pan about 2:40pm on Monday at Fellows Oval. Students 'angry' after 'terrifying act of violence' ANU Students' Association representative Ben Yates said many students were "upset and angry" about the events. In an email to all staff and students, vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt acknowledged Monday as a "very tough day for the ANU" and he thanked the university community for supporting each other.
