Does quantum theory explain human consciousness?
Daily MailA chess problem could help scientists finally unravel whether quantum theory can explain human consciousness. Sir Roger Penrose created the puzzle to prove the human mind can never be matched by a computer because it exhibits quantum effects. Oxford professor Sir Roger Penrose, who has previously worked with professor Stephen Hawking, created this chess puzzle to test whether quantum theory can explain human consciousness The newly-found Penrose Institute believes that the human brain is superior to that of existing machines because it makes use of an extremely complex branch of physics called quantum mechanics. The computer requires enormous amounts of calculation and still doesn’t understand it.’ He said of the Penrose Institute: ‘We are looking at how human brains work compared to computers and I suppose the practical implication is getting humans and computers work better together.’ Mr Tagg concedes that the computer program could be programmed with a rule that allows it to see that the position is in fact a draw, but the interesting thing is that it cannot work it out through number crunching alone.
