Us and the Night, from Melbourne filmmaker Audrey Lam, brings dreamy playfulness to Adelaide Film Festival

A library can be many things: a search engine and a sanctuary; a space for study and for leisure. For the two young women at the centre of Adelaide Film Festival selection Us and the Night — the mesmeric debut feature by Melbourne-based filmmaker Audrey Lam — the library is firstly a place of work. "It's hard to say what my idea was, because I don't write scripts — but I really had a sense of the movement I wanted, not just in terms of camera work, but how a film moves through time and space, and how, in a library, those things are suspended." "I wanted the film to be playful rather than logical," says Lam, though the film's abundant audiovisual puns and metaphors are anchored by a quiet conceptual rigour. Us and the Night comes to Adelaide Film Festival courtesy of Moviejuice, a fresh-faced new screening collective invited to curate a section for this year's edition.
