Portland, Oregon, swears in new government and mayor who campaigned to end homelessness

PORTLAND, Ore. — A businessman with no experience in public office is taking over as mayor of Oregon’s biggest city as it embraces an entirely new system of government — one that’s so different, the City Council chambers had to be completely renovated. “Now it’s time for Portland’s new leadership to meet the moment we now face and solve the issues that prevent us from reaching our true potential.” Wilson said he will treat homelessness as a crisis. “Remodeling council chambers is a once-in-a-generation activity,” Maty Sauter, director of Portland’s Bureau of Fleet and Facilities, told the outgoing City Council as it held its last meeting on Wednesday in the new chambers. In another first for City Hall, Wilson and the incoming Council members were elected under Portland’s new system of ranked-choice voting.
