Science for All | Microsoft’s ‘new state of matter’ for quantum computing
Microsoft announced a sensational new quantum-computing chip called Majorana 1 based on what it said was an “entirely new state of matter”: a topological superconductor. According to a long statement from Microsoft on February 19 night, the Majorana 1 chip has eight qubits made of these materials to perform quantum computing operations. But the press release said: “The Nature paper marks peer-reviewed confirmation that Microsoft has … been able to create Majorana particles”. In a BlueSky post, University College London quantum theory professor Jonathan Oppenheim said “the gap between the claims made in the Microsoft press release and the claims made in the actual paper” was “pretty astounding”.
