Two-year-old child among dead in 'kitchen knife' stabbing in southern Germany

A knife attacker has killed a two-year-old child and a man in a public park in Germany, with a 28-year-old man later arrested as a suspect. The adult victim — a 41-year-old passer-by — died while trying to shield the children from a man slashing at them with a "kitchen knife" in the city of Aschaffenburg, in the southern province of Bavaria, about 11:45 am local time, Bavaria's regional interior minister Joachim Herrmann said. A two-year-old child of "Moroccan origin" was also killed, Mr Herrmann said. The child suffered a knife wound to the neck, said Bavaria's regional health minister Judith Gerlach, adding that the injuries were not "serious". Failed asylum seeker Mr Herrmann said the suspect had come to the attention of authorities for violent behaviour on three separate occasions and was referred for psychiatric treatment.
