Delhi election schedule meet: Deletions impossible without due process; CEC Rajiv Kumar refutes claims of electoral roll manipulation
The HinduWith Delhi Assembly polls to be the last election to be conducted under his watch, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday gave clarifications on a host of electoral practices questioned by the Opposition parties such as additions and deletions in the voter list, recent amendments to election rules and possible manipulation in Electronic Voting Machines. Six points Mr. Kumar also used his last press conference at the helm of the Commission to give a point-by-point rebuttal on concerns raised by the Opposition parties and activists under largely six points — wrongful additions or deletions in electoral rolls, manipulation of EVMs, increase in voter turnout from 5 p.m. onwards, mismatch in votes polled and counted in some constituencies, slowing down of counting and amendment in rules to restrict transparency. “No deletion could occur without thorough documentation, field verification, and giving the concerned individual an opportunity to be heard, while for additions, names were included only after thorough foot-and-field verification by booth-level officers,” Mr. Kumar said. CCTV footage On the recent amendments in the election rules which restrict public from accessing CCTV footage of polling booths, the CEC said it was meant to protect voters’ privacy and prevent use of data for creating fake narratives.
