Bangladesh welcomes New Year with protests demanding Sheik Hasina’s prosecution
FirstpostOn New Year’s eve, a ‘March for Unity’, led by student activists, was organised in Bangladesh where demonstrators demanded prosecution of ousted PM Sheikh Hasina and sought justice for over 1,000 people killed in mass uprising in July-August The Students Against Discrimination group holds the 'March for Unity' rally demanding proclamation of the July Revolution and to mark the student-led uprising five months ago that led to the ouster of longstanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and to remember the more than 1,000 killed in the violence at the Central Shaheed Minar, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, December 31, 2024. As the world was gearing up to welcome New Year 2025, in Bangladesh the scene was starkly different, where thousands of protesters, led by student activists, congregated in large numbers and rallied at a ‘March for Unity’ in the capital Dhaka, calling for the prosecution of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ‘March of Unity’, organised by Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was carried out on Tuesday to demand justice for more than 1,000 deaths in July-August during a mass uprising across Bangladesh that toppled Hasina’s 15-year rule. The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee also announced that they would intensify their demonstrations if the Yunus-led interim government fails to issue the ‘Proclamation of July Uprising’ by January 15.
