Why Modi govt doesn't want you to see CCTV footage from a poll booth

India Today

Sparking controversy and divided opinions, the Union Government, on the Election Commission’s recommendation, has amended Rule 93 of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961. The change restricts public access to specific electronic records, including CCTV camera footage, webcasting material and video recordings of candidates during elections. Electronic records like CCTV footage, webcasting data and video recordings—essential tools in modern electoral transparency—are conspicuously absent from the list. Transparency activists have termed this a “setback”, highlighting that restricted access to election-related data could hinder efforts to expose electoral malpractices. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge described the rule amendment as part of a “systematic conspiracy” to erode the EC’s institutional integrity, aligning it with broader concerns over democratic backsliding.
