Aerial battles, mental battles and Wales' pick-and-go strategy – how Warren Gatland's side blew away England
The TelegraphWales blew away Eddie Jones’ side with a brilliant all-round performance in Cardiff. Warren Gatland knew that his side would have to nullify England’s strength in this area and constructed a game plan to try to turn it into their advantage. The plan centred around attempting to put both Ben Youngs and Owen Farrell under intense pressure to diminish the accuracy of England’s kicking strategy, while the Wales back three practised bringing extra physicality to the contest for the ball in the air. If the plan was less effective on Youngs, whose kicking execution, particularly in the first half, managed to turn the Wales back three and find space, Farrell was not as dominant as he had been in the opening two victories. He was charged down by Davies in the 11th minute and by Gareth Anscombe in the 43rd and critically, when Wales had begun to gain momentum in the second half after two Anscombe penalties, he kicked a ball out on the full from a counter-attack by Elliot Daly and Billy Vunipola, under intense pressure by Justin Tipuric and Josh Navidi.
