The fight to save India's most elusive cat

The fight to save India's most elusive cat Alamy The fishing cat stalks its prey in swamps, wetlands and mangrove forests The fishing cat is one of India's most enigmatic predators, hunting the waterways of its remaining wetlands and swamps. "They prefer shallow wetlands and are nest-making cats," says Tiasa Adhya, a Kolkata-based conservationist and co-founder of The Fishing Cat Project. "It's here, where you can find a rich haul of snake-head and cat-fish, on which the fishing cat thrives," says Adhya. "Villagers growing crops along the riverine buffer affects the inland fishing cat, because this slip of vegetation is an important habitat," says Kantimahanti. Healthy mangroves, healthy cats Mangrove forests depend on a delicate balance to survive, says Giridhar Malla, a PhD researcher from the Wildlife Institute of India, who has been studying the fishing cat along the Godavari River delta in Andhra Pradesh, and its links to climate change since 2013.
