Over 70 lakh ration card holders yet to undertake e-KYC verification

The Hindu

Over 70 lakh ration cardholder-beneficiaries falling under the National Food Security Act in the State have not yet been covered for e-KYC verification. A circular issued by the Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection D. Mohan to District Collectors and his departmental officers in the first week of February stated that the Union government had fixed March 31 as the deadline for the completion of the e-KYC exercise. The verification is based on Aadhaar wherein a beneficiary having Aadhaar authorises UIDAI server to provide his/her basic demographic data such as name, address, date of birth, gender, photograph to the State Food and Civil Supplies Departments for validation. An official in the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution says the rationale behind the exercise is to ensure that the seeded Aadhaar numbers belong to the persons whose names appear on the ration cards.
