
Myanmar: Where China wants election, West and its allies want it deferred
FirstpostAs Myanmar’s military junta has announced the intention to hold elections this year, China has supported the move whereas the West and much of the international community called for deferment until after the end of the civil war in the country Myanmar's junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing, who ousted the elected government in a coup on February 1, 2021, presides over an army parade on Armed Forces Day in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, March 27, 2021. In February 2011, Myanmar’s military overthrew the country’s democratically-elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and established a military junta. In November 2024, Myanmar’s military ruler Min Aung Hlaing visited China to meet Premier Li Qiang. In recent months, the alliance of opposition groups comprising the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Arakan Army, and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army has won a string of victories in the civil war with the junta, winning control of swathes of country’s strategic border areas.
