Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest: A bundle of contradictions

ABC

Andrew Forrest is a bundle of contradictions. Twiggy is standing up for the battlers and the national interest against "multinationals" BHP and Rio Tinto, he says, who have deliberately driven down the iron ore price. He built a major mining company out of nothing, acquiring tenements BHP and Rio Tinto had discarded, and fashioned Fortescue Metals Group into the fourth largest iron exporter in the world. Rock stars and global political leaders have been convinced to publicly endorse Mr Forrest's "Walk Free" movement on the strength of his advocacy and charm. Fortescue has provided jobs and training to Yindjibarndi people, in line with Mr Forrest's philosophy that work is a better way to close the gap than what he derides as "mining welfare".
