Why Mamata Banerjee romped to power in Bengal for a third consecutive time

West Bengal has reposed faith in her daughter Mamata Banerjee, aka Didi, for the third time in a row. ‘Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye ’, which became the Trinamool Congress battle cry in the assembly election, clicked with the people of the state—across community, caste and creed—who voted overwhelmingly for Mamata and her party. Though the BJP went to town against the TMC with allegations of corruption, ‘cut-money’ and delay and nepotism in delivery of social benefits, these seemed to have paled in front of Mamata’s dole politics. For the 30 per cent Muslim voters, Mamata was the ultimate refuge and a bankable anchor against the BJP’s propaganda of NRC, CAA and illegal settlers from Bangladesh. Moreover, Mamata’s rhetoric about Bengal’s asmita—she had repeatedly asserted that Bengal would be ruled by Bengal and not Gujarat—and the BJP being a threat to the state’s culture and ethos also worked.
