The figure of 315,000 Russian losses would be the equivalent of about 87 per cent of the total count with which Moscow started the war on Ukraine, though the US assessment does not clarify if the casualties include forces later sent into the conflict by Russia. Last month, historian Yaroslav Tynchenko and volunteer Herman Shapovalenko said Shapovalenko’s Book of Memory project had confirmed 24,500 Ukrainian combat and non-combat deaths using open sources.
