Clippers ‘skipped some steps’ last season and are determined to not do it again
New York TimesHONOLULU — When LA Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue gathered his team for Tuesday’s first training camp practice, he laid out some guidelines to set a tone about accountability. “When you end the season on — I know we had injuries and everything — but when you end the season and you don’t accomplish your goal of winning a championship, making it to the NBA Finals, you have a lot of time to sit back and reflect on things you could have done better,” said Lue, a two-time champion as a player and coach of the 2016 champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Leonard has described having point guards Westbrook and Hyland and centers Zubac and Mason Plumlee to start the season as something that will “be great for us.” “If you watched last season, our second string big, was either me, Nic, Marcus, you know, that’s kind of playing out of position a little bit on the defensive end,” Leonard said, acknowledging the positional considerations that affect him. So camp doesn’t end when the first preseason game starts.” The dynamic could change if the Clippers complete a trade that consolidates their veteran forwards and/or brings in another on-ball presence like James Harden.
