From the India Today archives (2005) | When Narendra Modi was denied US visa

India Today

Narendra Modi seems to have no escape from that uneasy space between victim hood and villainy. The US envoy justified his country's position by saying that "the US Department of State denied Mr Modi because he was not coming for a purpose that qualified for a diplomatic visa. Modi's existing tourist/business visa was also revoked under Section 212 of the Immigration and Nationality Act that makes any foreign government official who was responsible for or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom, ineligible for a visa to the US." Meanwhile, not dissuaded at being slighted by the US State Department, BJP supporters in the US turned out in big numbers to hear Modi's speech via satellite conferencing on Sunday. The campaign against Modi in the US gained momentum after a resolution was introduced in the US Congress condemning the chief minister for persecuting Muslims and Christians in Gujarat.
