Nigel Lawson, the tax-slashing chancellor under Margaret Thatcher and one of the titans of British politics in the 1980s, has died at the age of 91. Lord Lawson headed up the Treasury under Mrs Thatcher from 1983 to 1989, playing a leading role in her transformative government which rolled back the state. Rishi Sunak said: “One of the first things I did as chancellor was hang a picture of Nigel Lawson above my desk. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.” Boris Johnson, the former prime minister, said: "Nigel Lawson was a fearless and original flame of free market Conservatism.
