Mission North Bengal: How Mamata plans to wrestle back BJP strongholds
India TodayIt was from the northern districts that BJP started its foray into West Bengal. North Bengal, comprising the districts of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur, accounts for 54 out of the total 294 assembly seats in the state. No wonder then that chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her last tour of North Bengal in December 2020, asked people what wrong the Trinamool Congress did. The Trinamool’s performance in North Bengal will be critical in determining Mamata’s fate in a do-or-die electoral battle, now barely weeks away. Many among the 54 seats in North Bengal are reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, and the Trinamool feels Mamata’s charisma among these communities is still intact.
