How the Delta COVID variant likely jumped Victorian hotel quarantine and started a Melbourne outbreak

Victoria is one step closer to solving the mystery of how the Delta strain of COVID-19 slipped into the community, and it looks like another hotel quarantine leak is the culprit. Theory two: The traveller transmitted the virus to a quarantine staff member Professor Cheng said the public health team, which had only learnt about the link on Monday, was looking closely at all contacts the man had at the airport and as he entered hotel quarantine, including by reviewing CCTV footage. Professor Cheng said at the Holiday Inn health hotel, all residents already had COVID-19 and it was "very unlikely" they would have acquired a second COVID-19 infection while already infected. Professor Cheng said if the man's family returned negative results that would be a pretty good indication he was definitely no longer infectious after leaving hotel quarantine. But Professor Cheng said the genomic testing found an "identical match" with the second family detected in the outbreak, who are linked to the first family through the North Melbourne Primary School.
