Cases of snake bites rise in NSW, with warmer weather and urbanisation possible factors in increase

ABC

NSW has seen a significant rise in calls for snake bites, with weather and habitat destruction believed to be contributing factors. "We do want people to be aware of this, because with so many more snake bites happening, there's a greater risk that people will get bitten," she said. Weather and urbanisation affecting snake activity Dr Christina Zdenek from the Australian Reptile Academy said land clearing could possibly explain the increase. Dr Zdenek said heavy rain would be the other factor as rain "enables vegetation growth, which produces more seeds and also supports more insects, and there's a flow on effect through the trophic cascade". "There's a possibility it could reflect a little bit more snake activity, and probably importantly, human activity outside, in and around those places too."
