George Russell: Challenging Red Bull will be ‘a stretch’ for Mercedes in Bahrain

George Russell thinks it will be “a stretch” for Mercedes to fight Max Verstappen and Red Bull for victory in the first Formula One race of the season in Bahrain, he said Friday, the second day of pre-season testing. “But there’s no reason why, eventually, we can’t get there at some point this year.” Backstory When F1 overhauled its car design rules last year, Mercedes failed to adapt to the new regulations as easily as Red Bull and Ferrari. Verstappen and Red Bull tipped Mercedes to be a big threat to their championship defense in 2023, expecting the German team to fix last year’s issues such as the car bouncing at high speed and being unbalanced through corners. Russell reported the car felt “like a step in the right direction” and an improvement on last year’s testing when the team was “a bit lost.” Thursday saw Mercedes complete 152 laps with its new car, equivalent to almost three full F1 race distances.
