Louisiana conducts its first nitrogen gas execution after 15-year hiatus

Louisiana executed Jessie Hoffman Jr. on Tuesday evening using nitrogen gas, marking the first time the state has employed the method and resuming executions after a 15-year hiatus. The state’s GOP-dominated legislature expanded execution methods last year to include nitrogen hypoxia and electrocution, in addition to lethal injection. Alabama first used the method last year to execute Kenneth Eugene Smith, marking the first time a new execution method had been introduced in the United States since lethal injection in 1982. Currently, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma legally authorise the execution of nitrogen hypoxia, with Arkansas joining the list on Tuesday after Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed new legislation.
