For decades, women in Australia have been told they should have more children for the good of the country. These days, there's a long list of reasons why women don't want children, or feel it's not possible in a world that's "not like it used to be". "When you're so busy in life, when you've got study, and you're trying to keep afloat with the cost of living, you can't even think about trying to get a partner," she said. Professor Leah Ruppanner says you can't "strongarm" women into having children. Joy says having a "huge family" is what she's used to, but didn't see how she could manage more than two children.
