The New England Patriots’ playoff hopes went out the window after Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins dropped them to 2-6. On one hand, it would be a bit awkward if McDaniels returned in the middle of the season, perhaps forcing new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to look over his shoulder. Even if it’s not this season, it seems possible McDaniels could return to the Patriots in the offseason, especially after he helped bring about the best play of Mac Jones’ career — and considering McDaniels doesn’t have a ton of allies elsewhere in the league.
