Calls for social media to help prevent drownings

Andy Park: Well as crowds of Australians head to the water this long weekend, there are fresh warnings about the risk of drownings. The Australia Day public holiday is one of the worst days of the year for drownings and experts are now looking at whether social media is playing a role in drawing swimmers to dangerous locations. Kathleen O'Connor: Samuel Cornell says he's found at least 30 incidents across Australia where social media played a role in swimmers visiting dangerous locations. Kathleen O'Connor: He wants to see social media companies include warnings about dangerous locations on their platforms as well as better signage at the locations and the introduction of no selfie zones. Kathleen O'Connor: Samuel Cornell hopes the findings will encourage platforms like Meta to play a bigger role in warning users about risky swimming spots.
