The sun may be setting on summer, but several newsworthy weather events will occur around Australia before the end of the season. A Cyclone Lincoln drenching will finally bring relief to the relentless WA heatwaves this weekend, while on the opposite side of the country two separate weather systems bring a flash flood risk to parts of Queensland and north-east New South Wales. Wet weekend ahead for Queensland and northern NSW New South Wales was lashed by intense thunderstorms on Friday, fuelled by hot air and high moisture levels. Modelling now firmly favours La Niña's return in 2024 A survey of the latest global modelling for 2024 released this week shows 70 per cent now predict a swift transition from El Niño to La Niña by spring and while model accuracy is at its lowest early in the year, the forecast is consistent with the historical trend of La Niña years regularly following El Niño years. Analysing Australia's rainfall since 1900 reveals the 15-month autumn to autumn evolution of a Pacific warm or cool episode leads to an average reduction in national rainfall by nine per cent during El Niño years but an increase of 19 per cent during La Niña While the national impact may seem relatively minor those numbers increase across south-east states, for example NSW sees an average 34 per cent boost in rain during La Niña and a 19per cent reduction in El Niño.
