Can Dune-like planets exist for real? Sci-fi fans should take note of this NASA study

'Dune: Prophecy', the latest sci-fi series on OTT has captured the attention of people across the world. Science fiction has often imagined alien life on desert planets, with iconic settings such as Arrakis from Dune and Tatooine from Star Wars featuring arid, barren landscapes containing strange lifeforms. But according to NASA scientists, even planets in the so-called "habitable zone" — regions where conditions could support liquid water — face serious challenges in sustaining life. Research presented at the American Geophysical Union's 2024 annual conference showed that desert planets are likely to lose most of their water, making it difficult for life to survive. The NASA study, part of the Habitable Worlds Observatory project, suggests that planets need a significant amount of water to maintain a stable climate.
