Jerry West dead: Lakers legend was architect of 'Showtime' era

Lakers legend Jerry West was a hard man to please. Years later, West recalled, “I had my hands on the ball about midcourt with no time left on the clock and I said, ‘If I could have just gotten one more shot.’” Even so, he was voted outstanding player of the tournament, a rarity, considering his team had lost. The Lakers played for the title again in 1970 but again were frustrated, losing to the New York Knicks, despite West’s, and perhaps basketball’s, most spectacular shot. West later said that he believed Jackson had “absolutely no respect for me.” General managers Jerry West of the Lakers, front, and Dave Taylor of the L.A.
