‘Jamal Khashoggi Way’ sign unveiled in front of Saudi embassy in Washington, DC
CNNCNN — A portion of a Washington, DC, street will memorialize murdered Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, with a sign in his honor unveiled Wednesday in front of the Saudi embassy in the city. The unveiling of “Jamal Khashoggi Way,” a stretch of New Hampshire Avenue between Virginia Avenue NW and F Street NW, comes a month before President Joe Biden is set to visit Saudi Arabia – a trip that has already drawn criticism from members of his party and human rights advocates over the country’s human rights violations and the journalist’s murder. CNN previously reported that Biden, who pledged to make the kingdom a “pariah” after Khashoggi’s killing, is also expected to engage with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman while visiting Saudi Arabia. Saying the President would be “dishonoring” himself and Khashoggi by meeting with the Crown Prince, she called on Biden to “uphold your vow to bring all the perpetrators of this brutal crime to justice.” “But as disappointing as this is, if you have to put oil over principles and expedience over values, can you at least ask, ‘Where is Jamal’s body?’ Doesn’t he deserve a proper burial? National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby stressed to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on Wednesday after the unveiling that Biden’s trip to the Middle East in July is about a range of issues with a “big agenda,” and defended the President seeing the Crown Prince.
