Labour must be ‘a bit conservative’ in approach to general election, says David Lammy
The TelegraphLabour must be a “bit conservative” as it approaches the general election, David Lammy has said. The shadow foreign secretary said that despite its current poll lead the party could not get ahead of itself because the British electorate is “hugely volatile” and there are a “lot of swing voters”. Labour has consistently polled above the Conservatives since late 2021, with a recent “poll of polls” showing the party about 18 points ahead of the Tories. He told Cliveden Literary Festival on Saturday: “The Labour Party has got to be guided by the fact that on the whole we are not the natural party of governance in this country.” Mr Lammy told an audience that in the 123 years since 1900, his party had only won eight times in 32 elections, with only three leaders.
