James Webb Telescope captures direct images of planet outside Solar System

India Today

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has made a groundbreaking discovery, directly imaging an exoplanet just 12 light-years from Earth. The planet, named Epsilon Indi Ab, orbits the star Epsilon Indi A and is one of the coldest exoplanets ever observed. Cooler planets like Epsilon Indi Ab are much fainter and more challenging to detect, making Webb's advanced capabilities crucial for this observation. The discovery of Epsilon Indi Ab provides astronomers with a rare opportunity to study the atmospheric composition of a planet similar to those in our own Solar System. As the twelfth closest known exoplanet to Earth and the closest planet more massive than Jupiter, Epsilon Indi Ab's discovery marks a significant milestone in exoplanet research.
