Congress and BJP seek to stir up a political storm over decision to permit liquor manufacturing unit in Palakkad
The HinduThe Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party are poised to stir up a political storm over the Left Democratic Front’s contentious decision to allow a liquor major, Oasis Commercial Private Limited, to establish manufacturing units in the Palakkad district. The leaders also alleged that the Punjab government had blacklisted the firm for contaminating the groundwater table within a four square kilometre radius of its liquor manufacturing unit. Matters came to a head on Friday when Additional Chief Secretary Taxes, A. Jayathilak, promulgated an order permitting Oasis to establish an ethanol multi-feed distillation unit, Indian Made Foreign Liquor bottling unit, brewery, brandy/wine and malt liquor production facility at an initial investment cost of an estimated ₹600 crore. The State aspired to staunch the revenue outflow and generate public income by allowing liquor companies to establish manufacturing units.
