How crisis-hit Sharad Pawar, anxious Nitish Kumar are good news for BJP
India TodayOn July 2, top leaders of opposition parties were busy calling up National Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar to convey their solidarity after his nephew Ajit Pawar, along with loyalists, split the party and joined hands with the ruling BJP in Maharashtra. Two days later, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had a 90-minute meeting with Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh N. Singh, fuelling speculation that the former was exploring a return to the National Democratic Alliance. After all, it was Sharad Pawar’s political calculations that drove the Shiv Sena out of the National Democratic Alliance and denied Fadnavis another chief ministerial term after the 2019 assembly polls. Ajit’s coup is not only a setback for Sharad Pawar but it has also thwarted his efforts to unite the opposition for the Lok Sabha polls—at least for the time being.
