CDC: HIV tests rare in medical settings among WVa drug users

Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Emergency departments and inpatient medical personnel rarely conducted HIV testing on intravenous drug users in a West Virginia county with one of the nation’s highest spikes in such cases, according to a federal investigation released Thursday. Jim Justice signed a bill to introduce more stringent requirements to needle exchange programs that opponents said would make it harder to get clean needles amid the spike of HIV cases. The new rules took effect amid one of the nation’s highest spike s in HIV cases related to intravenous drug use. Needle exchange programs are included in the CDC’s recommendations for controlling disease outbreaks among intravenous drug users.
