Alice Springs youth programs close and reduce hours due to lack of funding, despite crime spike

Community leaders and social services are sounding the alarm as at least one remote youth program looks set to close and another eight will operate at reduced hours amid a crime wave in Alice Springs. Key points: MacDonnell Regional Council says it will reduce hours and close one youth program The sector has not had a funding increase since 2014 Federal Labor says it recognises the important role youth programs play in helping address community safety issues in and around Alice Springs A federally funded youth program run by the Macdonnell Regional Council is set to cease operations in Mount Liebig as a result of a 2014 funding freeze. Funding not indexed MRC's programs — like many other Central Australian youth programs — are primarily funded through the National Indigenous Australians Agency. In a statement, a spokesperson for Minister Burney said the Australian Government recognised "the importance of youth programs to help address community safety issues in and around Alice Springs."
