‘Enough is enough’ – how Europe’s farming protests could spread here
The TelegraphAs protest movements go, it has certainly been eye-catching. Farmers across France have been leading a tractor revolution against what they claim is draconian environmental legislation, red tape and unfair prices. Meanwhile, in Germany, hundreds of farmers and their tractors have gathered to protest government plans to cut diesel subsidies and tax breaks for agricultural vehicles. This, coupled with bad harvests from extreme weather, poor prices from supermarkets, poor trade deals and environmental red tape, has left the industry with no choice but to protest. In Wales, where farming is devolved to the Welsh government, matters came to a head this week when roughly a thousand farmers met at Welshpool livestock market, in Powys, objecting to Welsh government policies of the new Sustainable Farming Scheme.
