Parliamentary panel urges faster Tejas jet production to boost Air Force fleet
India TodayIn a bid to address the Indian Air Force’s dwindling squadron strength, a parliamentary committee on defence has urged the Ministry of Defence to expedite the production of the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets. While the Air Force requires 42 squadrons to effectively handle a two-front threat scenario with Pakistan and China, it currently operates only 31 active squadrons, each consisting of 16-18 aircraft. CHALLENGES OF TWO FRONT THREATS With the Tejas programme seen as a key step toward self-reliance in defence production, the parliamentary panel has stressed the importance of increasing HAL’s production capacity. The Tejas Mk1A, a domestically built fighter jet, is expected to play a crucial role in modernizing the IAF’s fleet while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
