Dodgers deem Shohei Ohtani ‘top priority’ as Dave Roberts reveals meeting
New York TimesNASHVILLE, Tenn. — Shohei Ohtani’s free agency has been an exercise in evasion. Roberts was among the Dodgers brass that hosted Ohtani, his agent Nez Balelo, interpreter Ippei Mizuhara and others at Dodger Stadium “a couple days ago” for close to three hours, Roberts disclosed, though he didn’t get into whether or not they had to sneak baseball’s biggest free agent through the back door. “ has a very good poker face.” Speaking of players the Dodgers have or haven't talked to, Dave Roberts said he has not yet met with right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes acknowledged he was surprised by Roberts’ comments on Tuesday, but declined to say whether the club had indeed met with Ohtani. When asked if speaking publicly about Ohtani might hurt the Dodgers’ chances of signing him, Gomes said, “That’s not something I’m going to worry about right now.” “Everybody’s personal in each area of how they want to navigate free agency, and I think anybody that has earned the right to be a free agent should handle it exactly how they want to,” Gomes said during a 20-minute session in which he was repeatedly asked about Ohtani but never actually uttered the two-time MVP’s name.
