Stage two of Canberra's light rail could be coming sooner than you thought — some of it anyway

Commuters could be riding light rail to the edge of Lake Burley Griffin as soon as 2023, but the ACT Government has warned getting trams over Canberra's watery centrepiece may take much longer than that. Key points: The ACT Government will split stage two into 2A and 2B They plan for Stage 2A to begin operations in 2023 Stage 2B would cross the lake, but the plans must pass through Federal Parliament The Government now intends to split stage two of light rail into two parts, with the first — dubbed Stage '2A' — to take light rail from Civic to Commonwealth Park, and '2B' to run from the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge. Stage 2A would likely add three new stops after the existing route from Gungahlin to Civic — City West, West Basin and Commonwealth Park. The Woden Valley Community Council welcomed the decision to commence construction of stage two, but president Fiona Karrick said she still held concerns the project might never make it to the Woden town centre.
